Please join us to congratulate Prof. Frederick Lynch who is celebrating his 30th year of teaching at CMC. As a recognized expert on social inequality, diversity policies, political correctness, and generational politics you can find Prof. Frederick Lynch profiled in Forbes and The Chicago Tribune, and his op-eds in the New York Times, Newsweek, and USA Today. While he’s appreciated the professional and public attention, as he reflects on 30 years at CMC, what brings him the most satisfaction is educating his students on how to think critically about “relevant issues.” Read more about Prof. Lynch via our bio link.

CMC’s Model United Nations team has achieved their highest national ranking ever, ranking 4th overall in the nation. Despite the setbacks the team faced due to the pandemic, CMC MUN swept West Coast competitors, winning Best Large Delegation awards at both Trojan and SBI MUN conferences. “The MUN leadership and team members showed remarkable resiliency and dedication after the frustration of trying to train, team-build, and attend conferences online for over a year,” said CMC Prof. Jennifer Taw, the team’s faculty advisor. “Despite all, the MUN organization rebounded, bringing on fantastic first years and sophomores, refreshing and building up everyone's skills, and creating a strong team dynamic." Our third student poet for #WorldPoetryDay is Brooklyn Montgomery ’22. Montgomery is a Government major from Tucson, AZ. She lives in Auen Hall and is a writing consultant for the Center for Writing and Public Discourse, a student assistant at the Financial Aid Office, a research assistant for the Presidential Initiative for Anti-Racism and Black Experience in America, and an advocate for the Civil Rights Task Force. "I view poetry as an avenue to take the implicit experience and transform it, not necessarily into the explicit, but an emotionally and linguistically charged parallel of it. I think it's probably the most beautiful thing humans can do with language." Read Montgomery's "Dissociation in Non-Apology" via our stories.

Our second student poet for #WorldPoetryDay is Lucy Thompson ’25. Thompson is from Bangkok and lives in Crown Hall. She is a member of the After School Specials a cappella group and a member of the Center for Writing and Public Discourse. "One of the things I love about poetry is that it's an outlet for me to explore storytelling in creative, exciting and sometimes amusing ways. Poetry is always interesting, and I take great pleasure in experiencing what each poem I read has to offer. 'Underworld Uber' is about how I imagine a mythical ancient Greek psychopomp would exist in a modern day world!" Read Thompson's poem "Underworld Uber" via our stories.

It's #WorldPoetryDay, and we are celebrating by sharing the work of some student poets on campus. Jihae Oh ’24 is a Literature major from Oakland, Calif. She lives in Berger Hall and is a member of the CMS Women's Soccer team and The Scripps Voice student publication. "To me, poetry is a way to depict the inexplicable. Sometimes words alone do not have the same power as when they are strung together in a poem to create an image or feeling. Poetry is a space beyond earth– a realm where time is slowed, and imagination is explored, " Oh shared. Read her poem "Rememory" via our stories.
