Long, long ago, I used to spun and dye yarn from raw fleeces, mainly rare sheep breeds, like Manx Loagthan, North Ronaldsay and Castlemilk Moorit. There are so many wonderful non-superwash knitting yarns, but most people prefer extra fine superwash merino
