Instagram Post Size Guide
The best size for an Instagram feed post is 1080 x 1440 pixels (3:4). It is the tallest shape Instagram shows without cropping, and it fills the tile on your profile grid. Stories and reels are 1080 x 1920 (9:16).
What size is an Instagram post in 2026?
Export feed photos at 1080 pixels wide, in any shape from 1.91:1 (1080 x 566) to 3:4 (1080 x 1440). Instagram keeps photos up to 1080 pixels wide and crops any other shape. Stories and reels are 9:16 (1080 x 1920).
| Use | Shape | Size in pixels | Notes |

| Feed photo, portrait | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 | Shown in full in the feed. The grid trims a little from the sides. |
| Feed photo, square | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | Shown in full in the feed. The grid trims the sides. |
| Feed photo, landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 | The widest shape Instagram keeps. The grid shows only the middle. |

How will Instagram crop my photo?
Add your image to see how Instagram shows it in the feed, on your profile grid and full screen, and the size to export. The checker runs in your browser and does not upload your image.

Shows smaller, with space around it. Use 9:16 (1080 x 1920) to fill the screen.
What aspect ratio does Instagram use?
Instagram feed posts can be any shape from 1.91:1 (wide) to 3:4 (tall), including 1:1 square and 4:5 portrait. Stories and reels use 9:16. The profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 tile.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Instagram crops a feed photo when it is taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1, and it crops every post to a 3:4 tile on your profile grid. Export at 3:4 (1080 x 1440) to avoid both. To change what shows in the grid, edit the post's thumbnail.
What size is an Instagram story or reel?
Stories and reels are 9:16, which is 1080 x 1920 pixels, and fill the whole phone screen. Instagram accepts reels from 1.91:1 to 9:16 and recommends at least 720 pixels and 30 frames per second. The Instagram camera records reels up to 20 minutes long, but Instagram recommends only reels under 3 minutes to people who do not follow you. Meta's Reels ad specs ask for the top 14% and the bottom 35% of a reel to stay free of text.
What size should an Instagram carousel be?
Use the same sizes as a feed photo, such as 1080 x 1440 (3:4). A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos, and every item uses the one shape you pick: square, portrait or landscape. You can frame each item inside that shape.
What size is an Instagram profile picture?
Upload a square image of at least 320 x 320 pixels. Instagram shows it as a circle, so keep your face or logo in the middle. Instagram publishes no size for profile photos. We advise 320 pixels because Instagram enlarges narrower photos, which makes them look soft.
How do I show my Instagram posts on my website?
For one post, use our free Instagram embed code generator. For your whole feed, create a free SnapWidget widget: it shows your latest posts as a grid, slideshow or scrolling strip and adds new ones by itself. Read how to embed an Instagram feed.

Frequently asked questions
It still works, but 1080 x 1440 (3:4) is now the best size for a feed photo. Since 2025 Instagram shows 3:4 photos without cropping and the profile grid uses 3:4 tiles, so a 3:4 photo is taller in the feed and shows in full on your profile.
Instagram keeps photos up to 1080 pixels wide. A wider photo is reduced to 1080 pixels, and a photo narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged, which makes it look soft. Export at 1080 pixels wide for the sharpest result.
Not at full height. A feed photo taller than 3:4 is cropped to 3:4. Use 9:16 (1080 x 1920) for stories and reels.
