1868年（慶応4年）の今日（旧暦5月15日）上野の寛永寺に立てこもった旧幕派の彰義隊と明治新政府軍との間で戦争が起こり、上野公園一帯から今の谷根千エリアへと戦火が広がりました。
潰走した彰義隊士の一部が日暮里の経王寺に逃げ込み、追い討ちをかける新政府軍の銃撃を受けました。
そのときの弾痕が経王寺の山門に今も残っています。
