九重連山は大分県北部にかけて広がる火山群で、九州本土最高峰でもある中岳（1791m）のほか日本百名山の一つに数えられています。 「久住」「九重」と2通りの表記が用いられていますが、一般的には火山群や周辺地域を指す際に「九重山」「九重連山」と呼び、その中心である久住山単独を指す際に「久住山」と用いられています。

近年では混乱を避けるためひらがなの「くじゅう」とされることも多いです。
秋の紅葉がみどころですが、山中にある法華院温泉も徒歩でしかたどり着けないみどころの一つです。
