Tシャツは19世紀中期、ユニオンスーツと呼ばれるアンダーウェアを分割することで生まれたとされている。
20世紀初頭頃に販売が開始され、同時期に米海軍が支給を始めた。
Tシャツという言葉が定着したのは1920年代頃。
アンダーシャツとしての意味合いが強かったが、1950年代にマーロンブランドやジェームズディーン等が劇中で着用したことで、ファッションとしての地位を確立していく。
